Quilt Studies is an academic field that explores quilts and quiltmaking traditions within the context of history, art, culture, and technology. Quilts tell us about the artistic and social values of a time or place. The history of quilts provides a continuum through which we can observe the development of art and technology. In this sense, quilt studies is the study of human society across time and culture.

The online certificate program in Quilt Studies is a graduate program offered by the Department of Textiles, Merchandising & Fashion Design.  It allows graduate and post-baccalaureate students to gain scholarly credentials in Quilt Studies. The Quilt Studies certificate strengthens the credentials of curators, collection managers, appraisers, collectors and educators. The University of Nebraska-Lincoln is an international leader in the field of quilt studies with its renowned International Quilt Study Center & Museum (IQSCM) and its comprehensive collection of quilts spanning five centuries and representing quiltmaking traditions around the world.
